Bertha Worms
Grandchild’s letter, 1895
Oil on canvas
Palaces Collection.

Bertha Worms, representative of the academic art, was one of the few female painters recognized at the time. After graduating from the Julian Academy, she became a teacher in that same institution where Tarsila do Amaral would attend years later.
As an accomplished portraitist, she captured countenances with an intimist approach that revealed the sitters’ state of mind. She made a living as an artist and an art teacher at a time when almost no women lived such a lifestyle.
