Oscar Pereira da Silva
Woman’s profile, Decades 1910-1920
Oil on canvas
Palaces Collection.

The female figure is recurrent in the works of Oscar Pereira da Silva, who portrayed women in biblical, historical and allegorical scenes – themes that were no longer in vogue amongst most painters of his time. Oscar Pereira da Silva was interested in painting early, joining the Fine Arts Imperial Academy when he was 15. He obtained great success as an academic painter and painting professor. In this work, it’s possible to notice the influence of classical figures on his female depictions - very typical of him - with brushstrokes that evoke sentimentalism and romanticism.
