Tarsila do Amaral.
The Samaritan, 1911.
Oil on canvas.
Palaces Collection.

Tarsila do Amaral is one of the most important names of Brazilian Modernism. In the first years of her art studies, she would often copy other works with drawings based on originals and with strong religious influence. It was during this time that she painted “The Samaritan”, copying an Italian work, with theme and style that would not fit in the artist’s very particular style developed later on. However, it already revealed the primacy of her skills even before her formal art education.
