Portrait of Fernanda de Castro, 1922.
Oil on canvas.
Palaces Collection.

Fernanda de Castro, portrayed by her friend Tarsila do Amaral, was a Portuguese poetry and prose writer that dedicated herself to theatre, fiction, translations and children’s literature. She wrote melodies for ‘fado’, marches and children’s songs, along with film and dance scripts. Fernanda was also one of the founding members of the Portuguese Society of Authors and her works were a personal reflection on the female status of the time, but always with a dash of joy and optimism.
