Tarsila do Amaral.
Self Portrait I, 1924.
Oil on canvas over plywood.
Palaces Collection.

Tarsila do Amaral painted this self-portrait at a time when she often traveled back and forth between Brazil and Europe. Cosmopolitan influences are quite explicit in this aristocratic representation of herself – a picture of the modern bourgeoisie – as well as the material aspect itself that reveals the artist’s academic education. This painting was created at the same time when the artist worked on her “Brazilwood” series, in which she focuses her look on social and popular issues. Was Tarsila rethinking her own identity?
