Vicente do Rego Monteiro.
Indigenous Motherhood, 1924.
Oil on canvas.
Palaces Collection.

Born in Recife, Rego Monteiro was inspired both by the European avant-garde movements and the search for his national roots. He studied indigenous culture of Amazonian tribes such as the ‘Marajoara’ art style, producing works that would blend cubist influences, European religious art and the Brazilian regional aesthetics, as seen in “Indigenous Motherhood” in which he portrays Madonna and the Child with Brazilian Indigenous people’s features.
