BRAZILIAN MEETING ON PALACES AND HISTORIC HOUSE MUSEUMS
11th Brazilian Meeting on Palaces and Historic House Museums
Cultural heritages: material and immaterial testimonies in the historic house museum
June 12, 2017
House museums constitute rich spaces from the point of view of memory and of sociocultural relations, considering that these environments, once inhabited, evoke individual and collective histories, articulated in the relation between the house, the collections and the characters, in different times.
From the dwellings turned into house museums and the presence of the legacy of the life in society in these spaces, the 11th Brazilian Meeting on Palaces and Historic House Museums promotes the reflection on the theme Cultural heritages: material and immaterial testimonies in the historic house museum. It is an opportunity to re-examine our traditions and roots.
To discuss the theme, we suggest two thematic sessions:a) Cultural background in the house museum and the migratory fl ows. The collections often represent the legacy of human groups, of great symbology for the communities. How is this legacy presented and how can it make a diff erence in today’s times?
b) Choices: what to remember and what to forget in the house museum? What to reveal to the visitor is a great challenge. Besides making choices on what to tell from the objects, contemporary museums have an immense responsibility to mediate peace between peoples, minimizing barriers of understanding between them.
The deadline for submission of proposals is 30th April, 2017.
